Having recently read Martin Chuzzlewit I thought it was time to reread this. I'm glad I did. I have difficulty enjoying villains when first I read about them. This was as true of Pecksniff as of Hades. Even if I know that the sentimentalist Dickens will reward virtue and punish vice - in the end - I find these villains tedious and distasteful. As much as I like reading about Tom Pinch or 'Spike' Stoker, so much do I dislike pompous, self-righteous, greedy characters. Let's not forget Jack Schitt. That being said I enjoyed their company much more this time around, especially Hades who is so disarmingly frank in his utter badness. Once again I enjoyed the genre-jaunt Mr. Fforde provides. Mostly this is a mystery thriller - but it includes the puzzle mystery, the police procedural, the hard-boiled detective; there are passages which are pure horror, others which are pure fun. There is a good deal Science Fiction and Fantasy, and social criticism, and above all, there is humor.
